On Saturday, Feb. 15, the Southeast Knights wrestling team brought 14 wrestlers to the district competition at Lincoln East in hopes to continue their winning streak at the state tournament, after their record-breaking regular season tournaments.

One wrestler qualifying for state, Jose Hinz (11), hoped to further his wrestling career after qualifying for state for the very first time.

“At state, I want to accomplish winning one match and to keep my attacks going,” Hinz said.

The state tournament, which took place on Friday, Feb. 22, and Saturday, Feb. 23, at the CHI Health Center in Omaha, NE, consisted of 32 Class A teams competing against each other within weight brackets. The Knights, who brought seven wrestlers to the state tournament, tied for 21st place with 20 points.

Earning the most points, with nine total, was Brogan Zegers (12), who placed sixth overall in the 160 weight class.

Hinz, who has been wrestling for four years, practiced intensely for the state tournament after qualifying at the district tournament.

“I had to work harder in the wrestling room, and focus on myself and push myself,” Hinz said.

This hard work paid off, as Hinz won the first round of competition after a sudden victory against Aiden Roberston of Millard South. Advancing to the quarterfinals and consolation two rounds, Hinz lost both rounds by fall over, therefore ending his season. Hinz earned two points in total.

With a great end to the season, the wrestling team is in great shape to start off the next season strong, only graduating one state qualifier. Hopes are high to continue the momentum of their record-breaking season, and continue their success next winter.
