Pumpkin spice lattes, the crisp fall breeze and the crunch of the flakey, fragile leaves that have fallen from their home: these are all things associated with autumn. But the question is: what to watch to match the seasonal, festive mood? In a survey taken by 37 LSE students, many shared their favorite fall flicks and shows.
“Hocus Pocus”
One great spooky movie, a favorite of LSE sophomore Addison Wolfe, is “Hocus Pocus.” In a world of evil witches, spells and a magical cat, “Hocus Pocus” serves as the perfect Halloween movie for all ages.
“I would say I’m a really big Hocus Pocus fan. I’ve already watched it twice [in September],” said Wolfe.
“Hocus Pocus” can be found on various streaming platforms, including Disney+ and Amazon Prime.
Tim Burton
Another good Halloween movie would be any Tim Burton movie; “The Nightmare Before Christmas” or “Corpse Bride” top the list. Tim Burton movies are known to have an enjoyable spooky vibe to them, especially due to the recognizable style of his animations. His gothic and slightly uncanny animations may be the reason for their popularity during the fall seasons.
Many LSE students said that they grew up watching Tim Burton movies, so viewing it during this time has become a seasonal tradition.
Tim Burton movies can be streamed on Disney+, STARZ and Amazon Prime.
“Gilmore Girls”
Moving onto favorite shows, one of the most mentioned on the survey would be “Gilmore Girls.”
The show follows the relationship of a mother, Lorelai Gilmore, and her daughter, Rory Gilmore. The two navigate their lives together, each episode revealing a conflict that eventually gets resolved.
Available to watch on Netflix, “Gilmore Girls” has a homey, small-town and festive essence that appeals to many viewers every year, not to mention it’s easy to binge. According to the New York Times, Netflix recorded 500 million viewing hours from January to June last year. The show is a fall favorite, and probably will continue to be so for a long time to come.
“Stranger Things”
One last show that fits the fall aesthetic is “Stranger Things.” Set in the 1980s, its vintage essence is perfect for curling up on the couch on a cold, rainy autumn night. The ultimate mix of horror, mystery, adventure, and science fiction with a side of comedy, “Stranger Things” is a great show to binge during this upcoming season.
Its popularity may grow even more with the new fifth season, set to release sometime in 2025 on Netflix. Not only is it a great fall watch, rewatching “Stranger Things” would also be a good time to refresh memory of events that happened in the show before seeing the new season.
While there are so many great fall shows and movies, the ones listed up above are the most recommended and loved by numerous LSE students. So grab yourself a pumpkin chai, your favorite slippers and the TV remote, and settle into fall with these four watches!
