From nurses, to doctors, to surgeons, all those in the medical field display immense dedication and diligence to their job. This has been an inspiration to many young students who find themselves eager to pursue their dreams of becoming health care providers and who are driven by the opportunity to make a powerful and positive impact on society. At Southeast Community College, 18 Lincoln high school juniors and seniors are accepted each semester to participate in a course where they work towards becoming Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs). Through this class, doors are opened wide for students who are interested in the health care field.
In order to qualify to apply for acceptance into this course, students must take a minimum of one prerequisite class, which include Intro to Health Science, Medical Terminology and Anatomy/Physiology. Once enrolled in the class, students attend from 7-9 a.m. daily, where they complete labs and learn basic skills that are necessary for students to successfully become CNAs. Much of the course content includes learning how to take care of hospital residents, becoming knowledgeable on the medical terminology and being able to assist patients in rehabilitation and with performing regular activities.
LSE junior Jayden Dobesh-Jackson entered into the program this semester, and has enjoyed this unique head start toward his career.
“I have been interested in the medical field for about as long as I have had a conscience for,” Dobesh-Jackson said.
He unfortunately experienced many health problems as a child, and that has inspired him to make as much of an impact as those who took care of him when he was younger. Dobesh-Jackson also said that following in the footsteps of his mother has been a driving motivation for him.
“She got her CNA over the summer and seeing her succeed in acquiring it really inspired me,” Dobesh-Jackson said.
Enrolling in the program might be rather simple, yet students should be aware that taking this course does require a substantial amount of homework; similar to any other demanding high school class. Becoming a CNA requires a lot of dedication, and in order to fully understand the trade, students must devote time both in and outside of school to be successful.
While much of a student’s time spent in the CNA program is filled with lessons, labs and homework, this course is also a great opportunity to forge new friendships and have a good time with students who share similar passions.
“The teachers are very nice and I have met a couple of friends, it’s one of those classes that keeps you in the action,” Dobesh-Jackson said.
Those who are wanting to apply to this course will need to be able to transport themselves, or receive a ride, and they must meet the financial requirements for entry. Information regarding the class can be found on their website, or through school counselors. After students complete this course successfully, they can officially become CNAs and will receive college credit. This class is a special opportunity for any and all students who are interested in the medical field, and it can act as a stepping stone to help students further pursue their dreams of becoming health care providers.
