At the opening game of the season, LSE quarterback Gavyn Semm faced his former Grand Island teammates for the first time. Despite the pressure, he kept his focus on the plays and his new team, as he helped the Knights secure a victory over the Islanders.
For Semm, the matchup was more than just another game. It was a test of composure, leadership, and loyalty. Balancing the emotions of playing against old teammates with the excitement of leading a new program, he proved himself capable of handling both the pressure and the opportunity.
Semm admitted the moment carried weight.
“I definitely felt a lot of pressure, but because I knew them, it also made it easier,” he said. After the game, many of his former teammates offered him congratulations.
The game wasn’t without challenges. When LSE’s Kadin Logan (11) went down with an injury, it was a major setback. Still, the Knights regrouped and found ways to push through. “It gave us a lot of confidence to win that game,” Semm said
Coach Ryan Gottula kept his composure throughout the contest, praising his team’s ability to execute. “He was really calm but proud of the team and the win,” Semm said.
On the field, Semm delivered under pressure. He threw a touchdown pass to Caden Ward (12) and nearly connected on another big play to Mason Mehta (11), which was called back. “If I had to pick one that counted, it would be the pass to Caden,” Semm said.
Off the field, Semm said the energy of the night could be summed up in a single song: “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. He also reflected on the importance of his roots, noting that early mornings and practices with his former teammates shaped his work ethic. If he could send them a message, it would be one of encouragement.
“Don’t let this loss get to you. There’s still plenty of season left. Keep working hard and don’t lose confidence.”
Looking ahead, Semm has a clear vision for his senior season: “[Our next big goal is to] win a playoff game,” he said.
