A group of seniors at Defy Gravity on Senior Skip Day
By Emma Lyness
On Friday, April 24th, the senior class kicked back, relaxed, and took the school day off. Unexcused and unsupported by the school administration, the tradition sustained as a risky, rebellious move.
So why defy authority and skip school?
For many, it was a day to mark the end of something big. Every year, students watch the senior class ditch school and do something fun. As seniors, it seemed like a no-brainer to follow in their footsteps.
The mob mentality of Senior Skip Day doesn’t end with former seniors. Fellow classmates band together and the general thought process seems to be this: If my friends are skipping, why don’t I join them?
Although it’s marked as an unexcused absence, those who aren’t knee-deep in tardies see senior skip day, typically the day before prom, as an opportunity to have an eventful, friend-filled day. Some may go to the lake, go to an amusement park, get a bite to eat, or just simply enjoy the day as a senior.
And so, the tradition continues.
