Many students find that there are so many clubs at Southeast, it is hard to know which one to join. There is a club for just about every popular topic including politics, religion, culture, and more. However, not many clubs focus on the community around them. The nationwide Key Club, sponsored by social studies teacher Chris Salem, does just this.
Since the goal of the club is volunteer work, club president Sophie Miller (12) points out that joining Key Club is a great way to get your GoPo (Government and Politics) hours covered. Club members have volunteered at Humann Elementary Fun Nights, the Huntington Clothing Drive, as well as volunteering at the Humane Society and picking up trash.
“(Don’t think) it has to take up a bunch of your time. It’s just kind of cool to be able to volunteer, and it offers a lot of opportunities,” said Miller.
Although Key Club is still not growing to the point the club president wants it to be, they are making a lot of progress and feel as though they are making a difference in Lincoln.
“It can get you scholarships or it can get hours checked off, so join even if you don’t love volunteering,” Miller said.
If you are interested in serving the community, or just collecting volunteer hours, become a part of the Key Club at Southeast.
