Lincoln Southeast offers a variety of sports: soccer, football, tennis, basketball, volleyball, track, wrestling, cheerleading, and more. But, for all of the athletic opportunities that are offered at our school, it is surprising that there are still many activities not available. Among the missing sports are gymnastics, hockey, and the increasingly popular lacrosse. Many students still participate in these, but have to do so outside of school. Junior Daniel Brown is one of those students who participates on a local lacrosse team along with several of his peers.
Lacrosse is a contact sport that is played on a field that is 110 yards long. A lacrosse stick, commonly known as a crosse, is used to toss a rubber ball roughly 63 to 65 millimeters. Attached to the lacrosse stick is a thick, webbed net that is used to toss, catch, cradle, and pass the ball. The objective of the game is to score by shooting the ball into an opponent’s goal past the goalie using the crosse. There are a total of 10 people on the field from each team. The four positions are:
- The Attack – only offensive players
- Midfielders – play both offense and defense
- Defense – goal is to solely act as the defense
- Goalie – main role is to protect the goalie box as best as possible
“They [the games] are rather fast past. There’s a lot of running back and forth. Most games are 45-60 minutes long,” said Brown.
Brown started playing near the beginning of his 6th grade year and has played ever since. He was introduced to the sport by a neighbor. Brown started out on a youth team, and when he started high school he moved up. He’s currently on Lincoln Rampage, where he and his teammates share an unbreakable bond, on and off the field. It’s been a learning experience and has taught him the meaning of discipline.
“I am with these guys almost every day of the week. They are some of my best friends,” said Brown. “I don’t know what I would do without them.”
Brown is uncertain whether he would play at LSE or not, if lacrosse was offered. He and his team have been together for a long time, thus the fact that some players are from other schools, making it hard if he had to leave his team.
“I would want to play it [lacrosse] for Southeast, but I don’t know if I could leave my friends that go to other schools, behind,” said Brown.
