Dark clouds covered the sky as Southeast’s Girl’s Varsity soccer team ran out onto Seacrest field. Despite the cold winds and scattered showers, the varsity girls were ready for a win against Lincoln Northeast.
“My teammates make [playing] more enjoyable, and I like the way I feel connecting a pass, or when I’m making a goal,” said team captain Alex Kuzma (12).
The Lady Knights played strong through the first half, keeping the Rockets from scoring the entire time with the rain and cold winds progressing throughout the entire first half, and into the second half.
Kuzma credits the team’s success to communication and positivity.
“If we are negative towards each other, then everyone is afraid to make a mistake,” said Kuzma.
The Varsity players on the sidelines cheered constantly for their fellow teammates out on the field. The Lady Knights on the sidelines called out to each other on mistakes and successes. At times they cheered by doing the wave, as well as forming a conga line.
The Knights won 8-0, with the Rockets losing without scoring a single shot the entire game.
“If I’m playing in a game against Southwest or East, it’s a lot more competitive. I feel like I am mentally in tune to the game, and nothing else matters,” said Kuzma.
Southeast will face Southwest for the third consecutive year at the HAC Championship.
“We’ve played them for three years so we just have to do the same thing we always do,” said Kuzma.
The game against Southwest will be Saturday, April 8 at 2 pm at Seacrest Field.
