On Monday April 10, Lincoln East High School hosted the LPS District Music contest. Court Choir, all three bands, and orchestra participated from Southeast.
“I [have] been in choir and band since elementary school, and it was really important for me because I’m not very athletic so you’re trying to find your nitch in the world,” said Sullivan. “It is a really accepting community, music is my biggest passion now, and I want to be a music teacher.”
Court Choir received division one superior. These competitions are competitive and take a lot of hard work to be prepared for them.
“We’ve been working on our songs for most of the semester,” said Sullivan. “Court choir sang the same songs in California and worked with the same clinician at San Francisco State University. She critiqued us and helped us prepare. Both the band and choir had a concert at school for the parents to attend so that we could practice run through in the concert setting.”
Wind Ensemble received a division one superior also.
“I do look forward to district every year because it’s nice to play for a different audience,” said Sullivan. “We are used to playing for parents, and it’s nice to play for professional musicians and teachers can critique us.”
Symphonic band received a division one superior as well, and concert band received a division two superior.
“I practice a lot on my own for band, and there is a lot of sectionals,” said Sullivan. “In Choir, there is a lot of run throughs continuously. I felt really good [about both competitions in the end]. There is always a feeling that you had a better run through at a rehearsal at some point but when you factor in the nerves, stress, and lights just knowing that your being critiqued. I think we did very well under that pressure, we were very focused, and stayed on track with the conductor.”
Overall, everyone did very well. Lots of time and effort are used to become prepared for competitions. Congratulations to everyone who participated!
