May 10 marks a big day for all senior varsity track runners – it’s their last district meet. The first gun goes off at 1p.m. at Scott Track by Lincoln High, and Southeast will be running against Elkhorn South, Fremont, Grand Island Senior High, Lincoln High, Lincoln Northeast, Millard West, and Omaha Northwest. Senior Maya Buss is excited for this (hopefully) second to last meet of her high school career.
“It’s crazy. I’m nervous, just because it’s districts, and hopeful because I want to make it to state,” Maya said.
She has high expectations for the meet.
“It’ll be sad [because] it’ll be the last one, but it will be a good one. Hopefully we end with a bang!”
Buss is going to Wesleyan for college to run as a sprinter, and for districts she will run in the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes, the 4 x 100 meter, and the 4 x 400 meter.
According to Buss, the best thing about track is the relationships that are formed.
“I have made a lot of friends through track and met a lot of people…it’s a huge team because nobody is cut, so if you go out [for track] you’re automatically on the team.”
Track has taught her a lot about herself.
“You are capable of more than you think, and sometimes you just have to get out of your own head…and just run.”
Good luck to Maya Buss and all of the other track and field participants at districts!
