For some, yoga is just thought of as another way to pass time, but for Grace Pilker and Tinsae Tessema, it is so much more. These seniors believe yoga can act as a fantastic de-stresser and a beneficial way to spend your time. This is why they started Yoga Club, which meets every club day during fourth period.
“I started so I could do the splits,” said Tessema “Honestly, that was like my main motive, but it is just really nice and calming. It’s not like I’m just working out… it’s a mental thing. And I feel good about myself after.”
Both her and Pilker became Yogees around seventh or eighth grade, and both just keep going back.
“With busy schedules it’s hard to get in a hard core hour or two hour practice. I try to get in a good yoga session at least once a week, but sometimes I’ll just do a quick thirty or a quick twenty,” said Pilker. I started doing yoga in seventh grade at a birthday party, and it was just really fun and chill. Once you know certain moves and understand the lingo it’s just really fun and you get kind of addicted to it,” said Pilker.
According to these two seniors, doing yoga regularly helps them be more focused in school, and allows them to escape the stress of homework or a busy schedule.
“It makes me calm and centered in,” said Tessema “It’s nice to just take time out of my day and sit and think, or just to not think.”
Yoga can be a great workout, and an efficient way to improve flexibility. Although beginning yoga can sometimes be awkward because of the uniqueness of it, once you get used to it, Tessema and Pilker think you will love it just as much as they do.
“Yoga is great because anybody can do it, and you don’t have to have any prequalifications. It is for anybody,” said Tessema.
