English teacher Lucas Kellison has become an expert in the balancing act.
He’s been a teacher at LSE for five years, but ‘teacher’ is only one of his many titles.
Also on that list? Entrepreneur, musician, graduate student, husband, and father. In edition to teaching English 9 and American Literature, Kellison is the owner of a successful recording studio, he’s a father of two, and is currently working on his dissertation for his Doctoral degree.
This year Kellison teaches English 9 and American Literature. He says one of the coolest things about teaching such a wide age gap is that he gets to see students at the beginning of the high school experience and at the end of it.
“[I get to see] how interesting they have become in that four year span.”
Kellison keeps growing each year he teaches because he is learning different ways to interact with his students. He enjoys sharing his love for music with his students by playing a song for his classes every now and then on his guitar. And while he enjoys his time in the classroom, he acknowledges the hardships of teaching.
“The hardest thing about teaching for me is that I am an introvert. While I love people and my students, they wear me out,” Kellison said.
Kellison started his own recording studio in 2010, which is one way that he is able to engage with his passion and recharge his batteries after a long day of teaching.
His business, Roxi Studios, is a great source of pride and accomplishment for Kellison.
“The last loan payment I ever made was one of the best feelings I have ever had, not because of the business itself, but because it signified that I wasn’t crazy for having a recording studio,” Kellison said. “[Also], what it did for my family, and our security getting past those tough years because not very many business’ get through the first five years, so that was a huge day.
Kellison is also proud of how far he has become in life because it is not easy opening your own studio.
“I am proud that I can be a good dad. I have two kids, Quincy who is four-and-a-half-years-old, and Cadence who is one-year-old.”
Kellison loves spending time with his wife of seven years and his children.
“My favorite thing to do with them is reading. I read to them constantly, and I love to quiz them,” Kellison said.
Kellison balances many different responsibilities and has some very good advice to give about how to do it all.
His two tips are: “1. Don’t try to control other people, and 2. Find your individual passions. As soon as humanly possible, start thinking about who you are as an individual, and what you want to do. Once you have that figured out, take the steps that you need to take to get there both inside and outside of school. Start doing that now.”
