Humans of LSE: Kiann Cleland

Past sports enthusiast and present skateboarder, Kiann Cleland, is making the best of her Junior year, while looking forward to an early graduation next fall.

Her high school career started out at Lincoln High School, but after multiple concussions she decided to transfer to Southeast. “I couldn’t do any of the sports I wanted to do, and all of my friends were at Southeast… It’s pretty cool being here.”

Cleland started skating back in middle school but didn’t do much with it until high school. Now she spends most of her time at The Bay or at the numerous skate parks around Lincoln. “I want to go somewhere with it, and do what the guys do.”

While becoming a better skater she also likes to go thrifting, which consists of going around to different thrift shops and designing her own personal styles. “I like to look for vintage stuff and different things”

In designing her own styles she’s also finding who she is. When looking at what she wants to do later in life Cleland said, “There’s nothing that really screams my name.” Which is why she’s taking a gap year after high school.

After being as Southeast she’s really glad that she made the switch. “I’m a knight and I like that!” With the school’s help, she is also able to graduate a semester early. “If you want to get something done and you prove that you’re capable of it, they’ll help you.”

Even though she may not know what she is going to do after high school, she knows what she stands for. “I’m a girl, but I like to do what the guys do, even though it shouldn’t even be like that. I’m a girl doing what a girl wants to do.”
