Opinion: Disney’s Encanto is their most magical film yet

The new Disney movie Encanto is one of the best animated Disney films yet. Encanto is an animated movie set in Colombia and tells the story of the Madrigal family. Each member of the family has a magical gift that they use to help their town. However, for some unknown reason, the main character, Mirabel Madrigal, doesn’t get her magical gift. The film has an incredible soundtrack and beautiful animation.

The movie first premiered on Nov. 24, 2021 and gained popularity on TikTok because of its catchy and relatable songs. Songs such as “Surface Pressure” and “We Don’t Talk about Bruno” caught the attention of TikTokers around the world.

“Surface Pressure” explores the crushing weight of heavy expectations in the lyrics, “Give it to your sister, your sister’s stronger – See if she can hang on a little longer – Who am I if I can’t carry it all?”

The song is sung by the character Luisa Madrigal who is struggling with the overwhelming weight of family expectations. TikToker Maribel Martinez heard songs from Encanto on TikTok long before she saw the movie. Her followers noted her resemblance to the character Luisa. As a result, Martinez posted a video of her lip-syncing Surface Pressure. The video went viral with over 24 million views. When talking about Surface Pressure on NBC news, Martinez said, “Not only does it have to deal with how many people deal with pressure … but it also relates to a Hispanic community where the family dynamic is brought up like that and we’re put under so much pressure.”

Not only that, but the attention to detail in the animated film is impeccable. Maya Phillips, a writer for The New York Times, wrote, “The computer animation, some of the best from any major studio in the last several years, presents a dazzling confabulation of hues and a meticulous weaving of precious details.”

Everything, from the embroidery on skirts to the detail of each character’s hair, was animated beautifully. The animation team consisted of about 500 artists (with about 800 crew members total). No detail was overlooked.

Overall, I definitely recommend watching Encanto. If you’ve already watched it, I recommend watching it again just to appreciate the amount of hard work put into this phenomenal film.
