The weekend before Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Lincoln was hit with ice, which in some areas of town had accumulated up to a half inch. With the ice came the cancellation of various student events, one of which included the Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Rally and March, which was scheduled to start at 8 a.m. on Monday the 16th.
According to the LPS website, “The pre-rally event will showcase performances from students in the Noah’s Ark Preschool, Ground Zero Dance Troupe, Traditional Native American Youth Dancers, and the “I Am Somebody!” empowerment pledge.”
The rally was going to be hosted by the conjoined effort of LPS and UNL to convey a “Call to Action,” a message to honor Dr. King’s life and mission.
Starting at the Student Union on UNL’s campus, the march was scheduled to weave through downtown Lincoln towards the state capital.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Rally has been rescheduled for Saturday, Jan. 21. All of the activities will be held on the second floor of the Student Union.
The Rally wasn’t the only student activity rescheduled because of weather conditions; another activity closer to Southeast was cancelled as well.
LSE’s 8th Grade Night was scheduled for Tuesday the 17th, and along with the current trend of winter weather was rescheduled for Monday, Jan. 23. The event will now start at 7:00 p.m. and will be an open house for all parents of current 8th graders who plan on going to LSE for the next school year.
