Student Council has been selling popular Valentine’s Day gifts since 2005 when Michelle Stewart became co-president after Brent Toalson left. In previous years, they have sold various gifts like a rock that says, “You rock my world!” or they sent x’s and o’s for “hugs and kisses”. This will be the second year selling memes.
“The idea of creating memes [came about] because of the LPS rule about not selling food,” said Finley Peterson, a member of Student Council.
Selling the memes isn’t only for the comic relief, though.
“Student council sells them hoping for connections between students,” said Stewart. “It’s just another way for students to recognize other students. It’s also a service project for students at school to have fun during the holidays. I’m hoping that students will think of friends who might not be recognized on Valentine’s Day because I know holidays can be hard for certain people.”
Nowadays, memes are a way of coping with things.
“Some of the memes have to do with teachers and the other half are typical memes you’d see on Twitter,” said Student Council Vice President Livie Wennstedt. “I think we’re hitting a wide range of humor with those. Hopefully people like them.”
Students can buy these memes in upper commons on Monday, Feb. 6 through Friday, Feb. 10 for 50 cents each.
