There have been multiple clubs added onto the roster of clubs this semester – among those new to the list are Environmental Club and Young Democrats . These are both clubs that will get students involved not only in Lincoln Southeast but also elsewhere in the community. These clubs will meet during school [on club days] and outside of school. They were started because they are good for the community and getting others involved.
Junior Lizzy Lavin started Environmental Club with Ms. Martinez. Martinez decided to sponsor this club she agrees with Lizzy that more people need to care about the environment and learn about how the earth is being harmed.
“Environmental club is meant for students who care about the environment, but aren’t necessarily sure where to put their energy in terms of being an advocate for the environment,” said Martinez. “The goal is for students to find something local they care about and find ways to participate.”
“Like Lizzy, I also care about the environment and imagined that I would be a co-learner along with club members and discover how to better advocate on the environment’s behalf locally, nationally, and internationally,” Martinez said.
Bicycle Club, co-sponsored by Krug, plans to pair with Environmental Club in some capacity, most likely when Environmental Club has concrete plans to engage with the local community.
Environmental club meets in E213 during 7th period on club days.
Another new club, Young Democrats, was started by junior Abby Peterson.
“Young Democrats club is just starting out, but our main goal is to inform the students of Southeast about the Democratic party’s platforms and to help them get involved in politics, both local and national,” Peterson said.
Peterson, along with fellow junior Harrison Hall got together to start Young Democrats because they noticed that despite there being multiple conservative clubs, there weren’t any clubs focusing on liberal ideas.
“We meet in the Diff. Chemistry room [on club days,]” said Peterson. “I’m really excited to start this semester, it’s been too long that LSE’s democrats haven’t been represented and we hope to start something that will continue for years after we’ve graduated.”
