Countless memories went up in flames on Halloween night, along with the Wilderness Nature Camp building. Wilderness Nature Camp is a Lincoln Parks and Recreation summer day camp that hundreds of kids have attended over the years.
Lincoln Police have ruled it as arson, but have not contacted any individuals about it. The fire destroyed the building along with everything inside, which is now nothing more than ashes.
According to Fire Inspector Rick Campos, there is approximately $60,000 in damage. Reconstructing the building is a possibility, but it will never repair all that was lost. Inside there were crafts made by campers and junior counselors, pages of silly quotes hanging on the fridge, and even a pair of ripped pants belonging to a counselor named Gooseberry, signed by each counselor and junior counselor.
Needless to say, the memories that were stored in there are irreplaceable.
Wilderness Nature Camp was the highlight of hundreds of kids’ summers. It is still unknown whether or not a new building will be constructed. Nature Center Coordinator Andrea Faas says that this tragedy will not stop Wilderness Nature Camp from continuing.
