The LSE Varsity volleyball team lost against Marian High School in the state tournament on Thursday. The game lasted three sets, with the first two sets being blowout victories by Marian, and the final set being a revival of sorts for the Knights, before they eventually lost it 22-25. Marian earned the first overall seed in the tournament, so LSE played them as the eighth seed, which they obtained via a wildcard.
“Each district winner automatically goes to state, and then there’s one spot left,” explained head coach Theresa Naumann. “All throughout the season, we’ve kind of hovered over the seventh and eighth spot.” The Knights ended up getting the eighth spot, and therefore played number one seeded Marian in the first round.
Despite the tough matchup, Naumann felt confident in her team prior to the matchup. “I think, being that we’re the number eight seed, playing the number one seed is a little intimidating,” she said. “But I think [the players] are anxious in a good way. They want to play, and they have nothing to lose.”
There are a few underclassmen on the varsity team, but they have many upperclassmen to teach them. “They take the leadership of the juniors and the seniors, and they really look up to them,” said Naumann.
