With the return of winter sports, most have their eyes on the more widely known sports, such as, basketball, swimming, and wrestling, but junior Paige Trevarrow is drawing back her bow in preparation for archery season.
Most sports teams practice at the school, but archery practices in a warehouse provided by coach Bob Bruner who not only supplies the targets, but the motivation, as well.
“[Bruner] provides us with all the targets, helps us fix our equipment, and we wouldn’t be able to do any of this without him. [He] doesn’t just have Southeast kids shoot there, he also has Southwest and Scott kids shoot. They don’t have official archery teams in their schools, so Bob is willing to take over and be their coach,” said Trevarrow.
Trevarrow has been shooting archery since sixth grade and has honed her skills earning ninth place at the state archery competition and qualifying for the national competition, last year. She is very excited for state this year and hopes to continue with the momentum and place even higher.
“State is pretty much what we work all year for. I’m just hoping to improve enough to place top five at state.”
Nerves usually get the best of a lot of people, especially in an intense sport, like archery, where every shot counts, but Trevarrow actually finds it to be a very relaxing sport.
“I like archery because it’s a calming and relaxed sport. Some people like to go for runs or read a book to help clear their minds, but I just like shooting. It takes a lot of focus and concentration but that’s what I like about it. There’s literally nothing better than shooting a perfect round (pictured below).”

Trevarrow encourages anyone and everyone to try and it’s not too late to join because in the winter months there are just optional, non-mandatory practices and competitions don’t start until the spring semester.
“[Archery] is a lot of fun and a lot of people would probably be surprised at how good they are. It’s just an amazing experience and something I think everyone should just try at least once.”
