The Capital City Marching Band Championship took place at Seacrest field this last Saturday. Many schools from around the state came and participated in this event in order to see who has come the farthest in their marching this year. Southeast not only participated, but actually hosted the event.
Grant Mackenzie (9) is a freshman in the trumpet section of the marching band. He was one of many that experienced their first statewide competition this weekend.
“I wasn’t nervous at all. I prepared myself so I would be successful at every show. Also, having practice and doing reps of the show everyday helped me not be nervous. I know what to do every show.”
Mackenzie also volunteered to help the competition go well. Since Southeast was hosting it, many students and parents had to help out to make sure that the schools from other cities would have the easiest time possible participating and enjoying themselves.
“I worked this job where we would mark students hands as the buses came in. I liked this job because I got to see and meet new faces from different places. I also liked it because some of my friends were there too.”
Sarah Kirk (12) is a senior in the flute section this year. She’s gone to the Capital City competition every year since her freshman year.
“The contest went smoothly, or at least it seemed very smooth. I didn’t actually get the chance to volunteer this year, but I have before and I applaud all the volunteers and staff that helped make it all happen! All the bands were fantastic to watch. I created some new friends from all the different schools and created some great memories with other friends.”
Being a senior, this is Kirk’s last year of being able to participate in this competition.
“I feel like I shouldn’t be graduating this year, I should have a few more years of band, a few more games, a few more competitions. It’s very bittersweet. I know a few other seniors feel the same way. I’m going to miss this next year.”
